How to Choose the Best Wedding DJ

You might have thought about putting together your favorite songs on a list and letting an app do the job of a DJ but there are certain things to take into consideration.

A music app cannot sense the room and play your favorite songs according to the mood and the crowd. It takes a skilled DJ to be able to match and elevate the mood with music on your special day.

Here are some tips when choosing the best DJ for your wedding:

Start Looking Early

Many brides plan their wedding months or even years in advance. Ensure that you start your search early, as many of the top wedding DJs will get snagged during peak wedding season.

It is a good idea to start locally and even check out some venues where potential DJs you like are playing.

Get Recommendations

Asking around is a great way to get recommendations for a great DJ. Anyone who has recently been married will have likely done some research and be able to share the information with you.

It’s tempting to hire someone you know who may have dabbled around with turntables but you want to hire a professional for such an important event.

Gauge Their Personality and Communication Style

If you’re still wondering how to choose a wedding DJ, this is one of the most important factors. Be sure to meet with potential DJs in person to get a sense of who they are. This is a great way to gauge their demeanor on your wedding day and see how they will interact with your wedding guests.

A good DJ can communicate with the wedding planner and coordinate everything that will happen during the event at any given time. They will also likely be MCing so you want to get a feel for how they will address the crowd.

Ensure They Are Flexible

Wedding DJs usually specialize in a wide range of music offerings from different eras and different genres.

Playing nostalgic and sentimental music is one of the best parts of wedding entertainment. Music sparks the brain’s visual cortex and helps you associate the songs with certain memories

You want a DJ who has had wedding experience, as they will be able to understand the flow and also be able to improvise should things change unexpectedly.

Ensure that the DJ is open to playing a wide range of music styles so that they can cater to guests of all ages.

The Final Spin on Finding the Best Wedding DJ

Picking the best DJ for your wedding is important but it doesn’t have to be difficult. Make sure that you choose a wedding DJ that is flexible, able to communicate, experienced in weddings, and highly recommended.

5 Creative Wedding Entrance Ideas That Are Sure to Impress

Did you know that barns/farms were the top reception venue in 2020? It makes sense—after all, a bit of outdoorsy charm can add some variety to even the most traditional weddings.

But your wedding isn’t all about the venue. You also want to make sure you have a grand wedding entrance, both at the ceremony and reception.

But what exactly are the best wedding entrances? And do you really have to pay a premium price for a creative wedding entrance?

We’re here to fill you in. Keep reading below to learn about five of the most unique and creative wedding entrance ideas!

1. Sky Arrival

Want to knock the socks off of your guests? Make a dramatic entrance by arriving to your ceremony in a helicopter. Go big or go home, right?

2. Pedal Down the Aisle

If you want to put a new twist on walking down the aisle, why not make your way down the aisle on a bicycle instead? This quirky idea works well for boho weddings, adding a lighthearted and unique element to the beginning of the ceremony.

If you want a little more drama, pull up to your ceremony on a motorcycle instead. While we don’t recommend taking them down the aisle, they’re a fun way to alert your guests of your arrival before you make your way to the alter.

3. Flash Mob

Let’s face it—flash mobs never get old, and you can always find a way to make them unique. The beauty of a flash mob arrival is that you can coordinate it with your DJ for either a ceremony or reception entrance. Plus, it’s a fun way of incorporating a special song that might be less suited for a first-dance song.

4. Curtain Reveal

Want to surprise your guests at the ceremony? Set up a theater-esque curtain or screen, and keep it drawn while guests file in and take their seats. Once the crowd has gathered, pull the curtains back to reveal the stars of the show—the couple!

5. Grand Drop

Want something that’s a little bit prom inspired? A timed balloon drop is the perfect way to add just a pinch of drama to your arrival.

If you want a slightly more romantic gesture, you can opt for a flower petal drop instead. This is one of the wedding entrance ideas that’s perfect if you’re working with a smaller budget.

Discover the Perfect Wedding Entrance Ideas

Your wedding should be tailored to your taste, even down to the smallest details. That’s why it’s so important that you arrive to the ceremony or reception your way. With the wedding entrance ideas above, you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect way to walk down the aisle in style!

Important Questions to Ask Before Hiring a DJ

When you plan a gathering, one of the most important parts of it is the entertainment. Entertainment in the past has come in many forms. For weddings, this has included even live bands.

As of recent years, the most popular part of a weeing has been hiring a great DJ. Hiring great disk jockeys in Chicago isn’t as easy as flipping open the phone book and picking one off the page. You want to know that your DJ is the right one for you.

When searching for DJs in Chicagoland, there are several questions you want to ask. Here are several areas to keep in mind while you make those DJ decisions.

What Is Their Experience

One of the things you may want to look into is what the DJ’s history is like. Have they been in the business long? Do they have clients who would recommend them?

Ask your potential DJ what they have done before. Get a feel for what their prior history is and what they like about being a DJ. This will help you understand who they are and what they will add to your gathering.

Inquire About Their Equipment

The last thing you want to do is find out that your DJ has no equipment. Ask your potential DJ what they have. Inquire if they need more speakers or anything else that you might be able to rent.

This will tell you if what they’re charging you is adequate for their services. It will also guarantee that you will have a sound that is loud enough for the venue.

How Much Does a DJ Cost?

Wedding DJs’ prices may be overwhelming to you. You’re paying for a person’s time and skills. You want to make sure that you have enough in your budget to pay for their services.

Make sure that when you’re allocating funds for your wedding or gathering, you leave plenty for the DJ. A good DJ could be on the expensive side. DJing is more costly than you might be thinking.

Know Their Style

One of the areas you’re going to want to know when selecting a DJ is what their style is. DJs in Chicago have a wide range of preferences. You’re going to want to know that their style will fit with yours.

Take, for example, if the DJ only likes to play techno, you wouldn’t want them at your hoedown. It all depends on what you’re looking for in the sound for your large gathering.

Find the Right DJ in Chicagoland

Make sure that the DJ you hire is the right fit for your wedding or gathering. You want to be sure that they have the right sound that will enhance your party. These questions to keep in mind will help you with your decisions.

Finding the right DJ in Chicagoland for your party will ensure that your gathering is one to remember. After all, what is a party without entertainment? Contact us to get more information about what our services can provide for your next party.

DJ or Band: How to Make the Right Choice for Your Event

If you’re one of the 2 million-or-so couples who will be getting married in the United States this year, you’ll be facing the age-old question: band or DJ?

This can be an agonizing decision for couples to make, as both options have their merits. So how should you make the decision between a wedding band or DJ in Chicagoland?

Keep reading as we discuss how to go about choosing the music for the most important day of your life!

Consider the Atmosphere

It’s always worth reflecting on the atmosphere you envisage at your wedding reception. Do you want a formal environment, or something more relaxed?

One of the best reasons for choosing disc jockeys in Chicago is the fantastic festival atmosphere they can bring to a wedding. They’re guaranteed to get everyone out of their seats and onto the dance floor, playing tune after tune of your favorite tracks.

Brass bands can be better suited to black-tie events, so when choosing your music option, it’s also worth remembering the dress code, reception venue, decoration, and all other aspects of your wedding day.

Compare Costs

As with every component of your wedding, the cost of a band vs DJ will be a factor. You might be wondering how much does a DJ cost in comparison to a band? The prices of wedding bands can vary greatly, according to how many musicians play, and what their reputation is.

Meanwhile, wedding DJs’ prices typically come in a little lower than wedding bands. At An Enchanted Evening, we offer an all-inclusive package that is not limited by the number of hours, nor by an hourly rate. You can take a look at the full details of our DJ services here.

Make Sure Your Taste Is Known

Every couple has their own individual and shared tastes in music, which can be one of the best reasons for choosing disc jockeys in Chicago. Bands often have a repertoire, and while they might be able to prepare a few of your favorites, they rarely have the diversity you’d get with a DJ.

Wedding DJs can tailor their playlist to those tunes you know and love. Whether that’s the Macarena or simply matching the music to the room with a fast or slow tempo track. They will also be able to exclude all the songs you don’t want to listen to at your wedding.

Are You Looking for a Wedding DJ in Chicagoland?

Having thought about the atmosphere you want, your wedding budget, and your music taste, you’re ready to decide between a band and DJ for your Chicagoland wedding. We’ve seen is that on these fronts, opting for a DJ is a safe bet, as you can ensure you and your new spouse’s favorite tracks get played.

5 Tips for Choosing the Best Disc Jockeys in Chicago

It’s no exaggeration to say that selecting the right disk jockey for your party could make or break your event. If the DJ has the right equipment and track selection, you’re sure of a night to remember.

Sadly, many events fall flat due to booking the wrong DJ for the job. This article tells you how to find the best disc jockeys in Chicago.

1. Price

So, how much do DJs cost? The price of disk jockeys in Chicago varies a lot. It could range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Generally speaking, you can expect wedding DJs prices to be higher.

In Chicago, you should be wary of DJs who charge very little. Often, you’ll find that these DJs have cheap or unreliable equipment. If you want a professional DJ, you’ll need to pay professional prices.

2. Experience

On the face of things, DJs in Chicago have an easy job. They simply play tracks that people want to hear through a good sound system, and everyone has a good time.

In reality, the job is a lot more difficult. Building and maintaining a quality sound system isn’t an easy job, and a DJ needs to be very professional if they want to avoid things going wrong.

A lot of technical knowledge is necessary if you want to work through the inevitable issues that will arise when DJing. Make sure you hire someone up to the task

3. Emcee Ability

For some events, you might want the DJ to get on the microphone to talk to the crowd. For other events, this might not be a factor. Make sure you choose a DJ who fits what you have in mind for your event.

If you want the DJ to also act as an Emcee, make sure you make that clear from the start.

4. Equipment

For a DJ in Chicagoland, it’s all about the equipment. A good DJ needs to have a high-quality sound system with reliable gear to run through it. A good DJ should be able to provide you with a list of exactly what they use.

Some DJs just provide the audio setup, but some might provide lighting as well. It’s important that you don’t make any assumptions about what the DJ is going to provide.

5. Style

One of the most important things when selecting a DJ is to pick one with the right style. It’s not enough to simply hire a “DJ” as they might not be a good fit for your event.

For example, a DJ who plays underground house and techno probably isn’t appropriate for a wedding. Make sure you pick someone with the right sound.

Wedding DJs Prices: The Average Costs, Explained

According to the CEO of The Knot, the wedding industry is anticipating a huge boom over the next few years. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced a lot of couples to put their wedding plans on hold. Mask mandates and social distancing, although they kept many safe, also took the magic out of a newlywed’s potential big day.

Now that the world is starting to open back up again, couples are prepared to have the wedding of their dreams. Turns out that one way to guarantee a successful wedding is picking the right music. Keep reading to learn about DJs as well as how to assess wedding DJs prices.

What is a DJ?

The term DJ stands for disc jockey, which is someone that introduces and plays recorded music.

A DJ normally plays a bigger role in a wedding than other musical guests, like a band. DJs interact with the crowd, may introduce the wedding toasts, and keeps the energy high during the reception portion of the evening. Unfortunately, because there are so many things to pay for in a wedding, some couples are hesitant to pay a lot for a DJ.

That’s why it is critical to know the cost of a wedding DJ.

What Factors Into the Cost of a Wedding DJ?

Six primary factors should be considered when paying for a wedding DJ. The first is the type of event that is being held. DJs may be hired for multiple events, but the wedding disc jockey price is traditionally higher because wedding DJs are equipped to handle the stress of such a large and impactful day.

A wedding-specific DJ will also have more experience alternating the music to fit the mood as the wedding celebration progresses. For example, they will know when to play softer more romantic music, versus lively party jams.

Otherwise, DJ pricing varies according to the number of guests, the length of the event, as well as how interactive the DJ needs to be.

Prices will also change if multiple DJs are needed, which is most common in large-scale events. Some DJs will charge for bringing their equipment and sound systems if the equipment is not supplied. They may also charge extra if there are things they need to control in addition to music, like light features.

So, when it comes to the question of how much does a wedding DJ cost, the simple answer is that it depends.

Comparing Wedding DJs Prices

Sometimes the best way to find the most reasonable DJ is to perform a wide location search. Especially in more populated areas like Chicago, it is expected that there are multiple disc jockeys to choose from. Start with a general search, like “best wedding DJ Chicago” to see how many results show up.

Most will give price estimates for their services, and will also provide more information regardiing their style and experience.

Getting Ready for the Big Day

Preparing for a wedding is stressful, and the fewer costs there are to worry about, the better. Assessing wedding DJs prices early on is the best way to find the type of DJ experience you’re looking for, and helps couples stick to a budget.

First Steps of Planning an Awesome Wedding Reception in Chicago

There are many steps of planning a wedding reception in Chicago (that’s why there is a long wedding planning checklist), and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Where do you start planning?

The very first step of planning is to think about what you and your fiancé want at your wedding reception. Discuss these key wedding planning details:

  • what your style as a couple is,
  • where you want to hold your wedding reception (and whether you want an indoor or outdoor reception),
  • the right wedding date (or season),
  • your budget (with this wedding budget worksheet) and how you plan to pay for it,
  • how many guests,
  • anything else you really want at your reception.

Then, it’s time to jump into the first steps of planning a wedding reception in Chicago.

Location

Once you’ve decided to hold your wedding reception in Chicago, start sorting through this list of wedding venues in Chicago. (Use other couple’s reviews and information on wedding review sites like The Knot and Wedding Wire for references.) Look for wedding venues in your favorite location with your preferred style and guest capacity. Then, contact each wedding venue and ask for information about their availability, cost (what is included), cancellation policy, parking, local accommodations for other guests, and other key details. (Use this list of wedding venue questions to assist you with your search.)

Once you’ve got a “short list” of possible wedding venues, it’s time to set up tours with potential venues. You should never book a venue without seeing it in person and making sure it is the “one.” When you’ve found the perfect backdrop, ask to see their contract and review it carefully. If the fine print is acceptable, return the signed contract as soon as possible and move on to the next step in planning your awesome wedding reception.

Food

Once you’ve chosen the right location, it’s time to start thinking about refreshments. Even if you’re hosting a wedding reception in Chicago during a non-traditional time (such as in the afternoon or morning), it’s still a good idea to have light refreshments and drinks to keep guests fueled and comfortable. For a more traditional wedding, you should expect to provide hors d’vours during cocktail hour, a meal, and a late night course that keeps guests dancing.

Depending on the size of the reception, you can plan to make your own food or hire a professional. If you’re hiring a caterer, research Chicago caterers online or ask a trusted friend or family member for a recommendation. Just like with venues, make a “short list” and contact them with caterer questions. Many wedding caterers offer tastings where couples can sample dishes so they know what to expect on their big day.

Entertainment

The third major detail of a wedding reception in Chicago is entertainment. Do you want a band, wedding DJ, or to play your own wedding play list? If you decide on a band or wedding DJ, start researching your options and looking for recommendations and reviews. The next step is to contact potential entertainers with a list of questions (such as these wedding DJ questions). You can also make your decision using these pros and cons of band versus wedding DJ.

Once you’ve got your list narrowed down to a few, don’t hesitate to ask for videos, references, or schedule a meeting to hear more about their services. Be careful if you experience any of these red flags as you search for the right wedding entertainment professional. When you think you’ve found the right wedding entertainer, always review the contract before signing on the dotted line. While planning a wedding may take a lot of time and effort, remember to keep your eye on the prize: an awesome wedding reception and celebration.

How to Choose the Perfect First Dance Song

Your first dance at your wedding is a special moment for the two of you, which is why it’s so important to choose the perfect first dance song.

Ways to Choose the Right Song

The good news is that it’s easy and fun to choose the perfect first dance song. After all, it’s fairly easy to listen to songs until you find the “one.” The bad news is that there are a TON of songs to choose from. But don’t stress. We’ve got a list of ways to inspire and spur your search for the right first dance song. (Don’t be afraid to ask your wedding DJ for ideas too.)

Choose a special song from your relationship

The song that was playing the night you met. A song that you both love to listen to together. The song that was playing when you said “I love you” or when you proposed. A song from a concert you were at together. Think back to those special moments, and don’t get discouraged if the song doesn’t have the right tempo for your first dance. Instead, look for other versions of the song online or ask a very musically gifted friend if they can record an instrumental version for you.

Ask a treasured friend or family for their first dance song

If you want your first dance to be a nod to a special couple, ask them if you can use their first dance song at your wedding. This could be a first dance song from your parents, grandparents, or close friends. Or for a twist, use an updated version of their song.

Select a song from your favorite era

Do you both love a particular era? Or is your wedding a vintage affair? If so, a hit song from another era may be the perfect first dance song for you—and it’ll be tons of fun finding it! Pull out your a-tracks or head to the internet to find a special throwback song that you both love.

Look for a song that speaks to a common interest

Your differences and commonalities brough you together, so why shouldn’t they play a part when you choose the perfect first dance song? Look for a thread that ties you together, such as a favorite music genre, activity, or dance you both love. If you don’t want a super-common song that everyone uses, look for a song online from a favorite group or do a search by topic.

How to Add Spice to Your First Dance

For a wedding first dance as unique as your song, use these tips to spice up your first dance.

Practice, practice, practice

If you want to pair a traditional dance with a modern song, head to a local dance studio for dance lessons. Make sure you choose a traditional dance that works with the music, and have fun.

Choreograph a routine

A choreographed routine is a bit more complicated, but definitely scores higher in the wow factor category. If you need inspiration, search online for videos of newlyweds that went over-the-top with a choreographed wedding first dance.

Get your wedding party in on the fun

If you want to create more of a flash mob effect, ask your wedding party if they want to get in on the fun. This is an idea with ton of possibilities, such as starting with a slow dance until your wedding party “crashes” with a fast song. Get your wedding DJ in on the fun. They can come up with cool song suggestions and build up to the moment. (Don’t forget to tell your photographer and videographer so they can get the dance on film!)

Add a confetti or balloon drop

Another way to make a wedding first dance momentous is to add an effect to the dance. This can be a surprise appearance by a celebrity or a confetti or balloon drop. Fortunately, there are tons of ways to surprise guests during the wedding reception; this is your chance to make your wedding first dance completely and truly your own.

fun wedding reception dances with newlyweds

Fun Wedding Reception Dances & Tips

There are so many fun wedding reception dances and so many ways to take those dances to the next level. Best yet, there are so many ways to customize those dances and make the reception reflect your style as a couple. (Don’t forget to bring your wedding DJ into the mix when you plan out your fun wedding reception dances. They can give you ideas, help you capture those moments on camera, and make it extraordinary.)

Choreograph your wedding reception dance.

Your first dance is an opportunity to show your true personalities and your style as the couple. If you are planning a wedding with a retro theme, consider choosing a song and dance that reflects the decade. A wedding planned around a movie is the perfect chance to dance to one of the movie songs. If you don’t have a theme, the sky’s the limit for first dances and fun wedding reception dances routines. If your fiancé isn’t into choreographed dances, ask your parent to get in on the fun.

Practice, practice, practice.

If a choreographed dance isn’t your thing, or you want something more traditional, consider a more classic dance and head to a local dance studio. You can choose whatever dance fits you, and wow everyone as you glide across the dance floor with a classic dance favorite. Or, for an unexpected twist on wedding reception dances, come up with a new take on a traditional dance.

Get your wedding party in on the fun.

Want to make a big statement? Ask your wedding party if they want to have fun with a choreographed (or semi-choreographed) routine. While this may take a bit more scheduling and coordinating, the result is sure to make a big impression on guests. Plus, if you get your wedding DJ in on the fun, they can make a dance feel like the event of the year.

Throw a surprise into the mix.

The unexpected can make guests howl with laughter or sit in awe (or both). It’s fun to imagine the look on your guests’ faces when an unexpected guest shows up (such as a favorite relative or celebrity) or confetti falls from the rafters. There are so many ideas for wedding reception surprises, and so many ways to customize the surprise to fit with your wedding reception theme and/or atmosphere.

Add table games for non-dancers.

A great wedding reception goes beyond fun wedding reception dances and includes everyone. Table games are a great way to include non-dancers and give guests some down-time fun when they need a break. Plus, table games can become a group activity when your wedding DJ doubles as a game show host. (Ask your wedding DJ if they have experience with table games, plus these other wedding DJ questions, when hiring them.)

Personalized trivia about the couple can leave guests in stitches, or become a conversation starter as guests compare what they know about the couple. You can also take trivia onto the dance floor with fun games like the shoe game. (Make sure you hire a DJ with the experience to lead your dance floor games.)

End your wedding reception with a bang. (Not a literal one.)

If your venue allows it, make a big bang with an awesome firework show at the end of the night. Make sure you tell your DJ so they can discreetly direct guests to the windows or outside to view the show. (Don’t forget to put out late night snacks, like flavored popcorn, cotton candy, or another themed refreshment, for guests to enjoy during the fireworks.) It’s a great send off idea, or a way to hang out with your guests after the fun wedding reception dances are over.

A Full List of Wedding Songs Needed for a Wonderful Day

You spend months (maybe years) planning out almost every moment of your wedding day. So why shouldn’t you plan out wedding music? Now, you can with this full list of songs needed for a wonderful wedding day.

Before we jump to the full list, it’s important to think about the music you’ll need before you walk down the aisle. This is the time to think about wedding playlists for your time in your dressing room getting ready for your big day. You can also plan out your engagement party, showers, rehearsal dinner, and other pre-wedding get togethers.

Ceremony

For your ceremony, you’ll need at least four different songs, including the prelude, processional, bridal processional, and recessional. The prelude is the music that is played when guests enter the ceremony. It is followed by the processional, which is played as attendants walk down the aisle. Bridal processional music is for that beautiful moment when the bride walks down the aisle. After the ceremony, recessional music is played as the wedding party and newlyweds exit. Some couples add other music to their list of wedding songs for the ceremony, especially during key moments. Ceremony music can be played by instrumentalists or a wedding DJ.

Cocktail Hour

Beautiful wedding ceremony music is followed by beautiful cocktail hour music. Again, this list of wedding songs needed for this time can be played by instrumentalists or a wedding DJ. Many wedding DJs offer this service as part of a package. If the DJ charges by the hour, you should ask them before hiring if cocktail hour music is included (along with these other wedding DJ questions). Cocktail hour music flows into the more upbeat songs of the wedding reception.

Wedding Dinner

The list of wedding songs needed for a wedding reception is markedly longer. After all, this is your chance to celebrate! It shouldn’t be surprising then, that the wedding party entrance song is typically and upbeat song. (Note: it doesn’t have to be upbeat! Talk to your wedding DJ for recommendations.) If you want to spice up your entrance, use one of these wedding party entrance ideas.

Once you’ve arrived, it’s time for dinner and toasts. You’ll need music for this time too, so guests can enjoy the atmosphere and each other’s company. If you’re using a wedding DJ, ask them if they can provide dinner music and provide a microphone for toasts. (Not all wedding DJs and bands do.) A wedding DJ can also, if needed, emcee the affair.

When dinner is done, it’s time for the traditional cake cutting (or cupcakes or another non-cake dessert). If you’re using a wedding DJ, ask them to make an announcement for guests and to coordinate the big moment with your videographer and photographer. (Tip: the best wedding DJs know how to work with other professionals to get your key moments on film.)

Wedding Dance

Now for the wedding dance! The wedding dance typically includes a few traditional dances, though you can customize your reception with games and dances—if you hire a band or wedding DJ that customizes their playlist to your preferences. (Make sure you ask your wedding DJ this question when contacting them.) Typically the wedding dance includes these key moments:

  • Wedding Party Announcement
  • First Dance (use these first dance ideas to take it to another level)
  • Mother-Son Dance
  • Father-Daughter Dance
  • Last Dance & Exit

You can come up with your own ideas for these dances (with this wedding DJ checklist), or you can ask your wedding DJ for recommendations. (To spice up your reception, use these parent-child dance ideas and first dance ideas.) Remember, have fun!
